UM MOOT CLUB

UM Moot Club is a student organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing the skills of mooting among law students at the University of Malaya. Mooting involves simulated court proceedings, where students argue cases in front of judges, honing their legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. The club organizes auditions, workshops, training sessions, and internal competitions to prepare students for national and international moot court competitions.

The UM Moot Club operates under the umbrella of the University of Malaya Law Society (UMLS), the principal student body representing law students at the university. The UMLS oversees various student activities, aiming to provide a holistic educational experience that complements the academic curriculum. UM Moot Club, as a specialized arm of the UMLS, focuses specifically on developing litigation and advocacy skills, which are crucial for future legal practitioners.

The correlation between the UM Moot Club and the UMLS is synergistic. UM Moot Club benefits from the resources, support, and broader platform provided by the UMLS, while the UMLS leverages the club's activities to enhance its overall mission of fostering a dynamic and engaging legal education environment. Together, they work to ensure that law students at the University of Malaya have ample opportunities to excel in mooting and other co-curricular pursuits, ultimately preparing them for successful careers in the legal field.

Route to Moot 2024/2025

Route to Moot 2024/2025 guides students through moot court competitions with lectures on mooting basics and mentorship. It develops skills in research, writing, and advocacy. Route to Moot mainly emphasises for first year students to let them know about the basics of mooting.

Route to Moot was conceived as an initial initiative aimed at introducing and cultivating the culture of mooting among students of the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, particularly first-year undergraduates. Through an interactive and experiential approach, the programme seeks to provide foundational exposure to key mooting skills such as legal research, the drafting of written submissions, and the effective delivery of oral arguments before a tribunal or court.

In addition, the implementation of this programme is to broaden students’ understanding of the overall mooting process, while simultaneously building self-confidence, strengthening communication skills and analytical thinking, and fostering a deep interest in the art of advocacy as a central pillar in shaping the identity of a legal professional.

Internal Moot Competition

UM Moot Club organizes an internal moot competition annually. In 2025, UM Moot Club collaborated with ALSA UM, hosting the Internal Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition (ICAMC), to focus on developing students' expertise in commercial law. It aims to provide an effective platform for law students to explore the fundamentals of mooting while gaining valuable exposure to the intricacies of commercial arbitration.

The competition emphasizes two essential legal skills—advocacy and research—both of which are pivotal throughout the legal profession. Additionally, it seeks to promote a greater appreciation and understanding of commercial arbitration while serving as a training ground for students to develop confidence, teamwork and professionalism within a competitive yet educational environment.

Internal Moot aims to inspire confidence in students from the faculty as well as strengthen the mooting culture within the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya.

UM-NUS Friendly Moot 2025

The UM-NUS Friendly Moot Competition is an annual event that strengthens the academic collaboration and understanding camaraderie between the Faculty of Law, University Malaya (UM), and the National University of Singapore (NUS). This program aims to foster closer ties between law students from both universities through academic partnerships and mutual learning.

The competition also provides a unique platform for students to enhance their mooting, legal research, and oral advocacy skills in a professional setting. It offers participants the opportunity to understand the processes involved in preparing for and competing in moot competitions, emphasising the importance of mastering essential advocacy techniques and legal research.
